HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION: SREBRENICA MASSACRE
In 1993, the United Nations designated three cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to be safe areas that were to be protected by international peacekeepers. The three cities were Zepa, Srebrenica, and Gorazde. On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb troops seized control of the UN controlled city from approximately 400 Dutch peacekeepers. During the previous day, the Dutch and NATO forces in the area made an attempt to bomb the oncoming tanks and soldiers, but their attempts were unsuccessful. The night of July 11th, Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb military leader said, “We give this town to the Serb nation.…The time has come to take revenge on the Muslims.” Women and children in the city were forced onto buses to be sent to Bosniak territory. There were reports of rape and abuse. Many of the Bosniak Muslim boys and men fled the city through the forest. The Serbs deceived the fleeing men by making false promises and many surrendered themselves to the Bosnian Serb forces. Some of the captured men were killed immediately and others were shipped off for execution. The men were blindfolded and transported north of Srebrenica to an area near the Drina River which is along the northern border near Serbia. The executions lasted for days and thousands of men were slaughtered. Although the intention of the Bosnian Serb forces was to kill military aged men, many elderly men and young boys were included. The Bosnian Serb forces were carrying out the ethnic cleansing mission of Milosevic. The killings were carried out by the Bosnian Serb forces until July 16, 1995. To make matters worse, many of the victims were bound and mutilated. Although there isn't an official death toll, an approximated 7000 to 8000 Bosniak Muslim men were killled.
